Match abandoned; Sri Lanka in final

RAWALPINDI, OCT. 11. Sri Lanka qualified for the triangular series final against Pakistan on Monday after its limited-overs international against Zimbabwe was abandoned due to a wet outfield.

Umpires Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar inspected the outfield of Pindi Cricket Stadium three times before they called off the match.

The two teams were each awarded three points from the game.

"Safety and security of the players is very important for us and the conditions are not good for an international game," said Taufel.

Heavy rains on Sunday left the outfield and square wet and despite the best efforts of the groundsmen, the conditions did not improve — especially at the bowlers' run-up on one side of the wicket which was quite soggy.

Pakistan has already qualified for the final after securing 16 points from three victories — two against Zimbabwe and one against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, which will meet Pakistan in its last league game in Lahore on Thursday before both the sides meet again in the final on October 16, raised its points tally to 10 from three matches. Winless Zimbabwe finished its tour with four points from four games.

"This (weather) is not in our control," said Zimbabwean captain Tatenda Taibu.— AP
