BHIWANDI, OCT. 11. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today cautioned the people in Maharashtra against the Shiv Sena and the BJP which were "spreading hate and communalism for their own selfish needs." Addressing the gathering at the Parshuram Tavre stadium in this powerloom town, on the final day of campaigning for the October 13 Assembly elections, Ms. Gandhi exhorted the people not to fall for those who "seemingly opposed communal forces and shed crocodile tears." Such forces were only opposed to the Sena-BJP on the surface. "We must be careful of such people," she warned. The people had waited for over three hours to hear her, braving an unexpected downpour and scorching heat alternatively. Ms. Gandhi entered the stadium to loud cheers of "Sonia Gandhi Zindabad," and much flag waving. The five-year rule of the Sena-BJP in Maharashtra was marked by the absence of social justice, and oppression and corruption. "I don't think we should go through this again," she said. Even at the Centre in the last five years, the BJP-led coalition rule had affected the common man and the country had to hang its head in shame, she claimed.
`Maharashtra neglected'
"Yesterday, I heard that Mr.Vajpayee said that Maharashtra was not neglected by the Centre, but I say this is not true. All the Congress-ruled States were treated badly and the Centre did neglect these States," she asserted. The Centre must treat all States impartially. "I don't want to make personal accusations, it's not in my culture. But I accuse the BJP-Sena of having destroyed all the high ideals that are part of this country's tradition," she said.
