Gogoi visits flood-hit areas

GUWAHATI, OCT. 11. The Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, today visited the flood-hit areas of Goalpara district to take stock of the devastations caused by flash floods in Lower Assam district.

Mr. Gogoi, who was accompanied by two of this ministerial colleagues and high officials, visited the worst affected sites and spoke to members of the bereaved families and other affected people. He assured them of full assistance by the State Government in their rehabilitation.

The toll in the flash flood has mounted to 152 with the rescue teams of the army and civil authorities recovering 30 more bodies from different places. Mr. Gogoi later reviewed the relief and rehabilitation operations and instructed the district authorities to ensure that there was no dearth of relief materials.

The State Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5,000 each to the next kin of the victims.

The opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), however, accused the State Government of failing to respond to the emergency situation.
