Australia pulls out of Champions Trophy

ISLAMABAD, OCT. 11. Olympic field hockey champion Australia has decided not to participate in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan because of security fears, an official of the Pakistan Hockey Federation said on Monday.

The decision came after a suicide bombing at a mosque killed four people in the eastern city of Lahore — where the tournament will be held from December 4 to 12.

Traditionally, the top six countries in the Olympic Games take part in the Champions Trophy. Holland, Germany, Spain and New Zealand have confirmed their participation in the tournament, Khan said.

India finished seventh in this year's Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, and Khan said the Indian team would replace the Australians. — AP
