World Habitat Week observed

NEW DELHI OCT. 7. To mark World Habitat Week, the Union Minister of State for Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja, today planted a sapling in the premises of a New Delhi Municipal Council-run school at Bapu Dham. Speaking on the occasion, she emphasised the need to improve the environment and keep the city neat and clean.

The Chairperson of NDMC, Sindhushree Khullar, the MLA and Vice-Chairperson, Tajdar Babar, and the MLA and civic body member, Ashok Ahuja, were also present.

Mrs. Khullar said the NDMC was fully committed to make the environment of its area pollution free.

Special assembly for special people

NEW DELHI OCT. 7. On the occasion of World Elders Day, Delhi Public School in Rohini hosted a special assembly in honour of these "special people''. While the chief guest on the occasion was the eminent academician Sharada Nayak, the school principal, Rita Sen, gave the welcome address. Ms. Nayak gave away the 100 per cent attendance awards to students. A dance item titled "Arpan'' dedicated to grandparents was also presented on the occasion.

NCC team flagged in

NEW DELHI OCT. 7. The NCC girls mountaineering expedition team was flagged in by Lieutenant-General, M.C. Bhandari, at the NCC headquarters her on Tuesday. The team successfully scaled the Manali and Sitidhar peaks on September 21.

It is the first women's team to conquer the Manali peak. The team was lead by Lt. Col. T. Siva Kumar, and consisted 21 cadets qualified in basic and advanced mountaineering course from various mountaineering institutes.

Award presented

NEW DELHI OCT. 7. Vidya Devi Jindal was presented the International School Award by the Minister of State for School Standard of the United Kingdom, David Miliband, at a function here this past weekend. The award is in recognition of the outstanding achievements of the school.

According to a release issued by the school, Vidya Devi Jindal is one of the five schools in the country to receive this award. The students of the school put up a wall display of their international activities for the guests present at the award ceremony.

Focus on senior citizens' security

NEW DELHI OCT. 7. People's Action, a non-government organisation, has decided to bring Resident Welfare Associations from all over the city together this Sunday to discuss issues relating to the security of senior citizen. The conference will discuss the causes of violence as well as formulate a strategy to prevent such incidents in future.

People's Action has also invited security expert R.C. Sood to introduce an orientation programme. The conference will be held at the India Habitat Centre. The Delhi Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, and former Lieutenant Governor, P.K. Dave, are expected to participate in the discussions.
