Olympiad camp in full swing

KOZHIKODE, OCT. 1. ``Give us some space too,'' she pleaded. India's first Woman Grandmaster S. Vijayalakhsmi requested the media to give good coverage to the forthcoming Chess Olympiad in Spain. India is expected to do well in the ultimate team championship in international chess, beginning on October 15.

Vijayalakshmi, a key member in the Indian women's team, was speaking at a press meet organised by the AICF at the start of the second session of the Olympiad coaching camp, of which Elizbar Ubilava from Georgia took charge on Friday.

The former trainer of Viswanathan Anand said the Indian men had good chances in Spain, ``The team is very strong with players like Vishy Anand, Sasikiran, Harikrishna and the other youngsters,'' he said. ``The Russians are the favourites of course, but India's chances are as good as the other top teams.''

He, however, said it would be better to be ``quiet and humble'' now rather than speaking of the medal chances. The women's team coach Ruslan Scherbakov of Russia agreed with him. ``I'm happy with the way the training camp has gone on so far,'' he said. Vijayalkshmi, who won the individual silver on the top board in the last two Olympiadssaid the camp had been excellent. — Our Sports Reporter
