Visitor biometric system from today

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, SEPT. 29. Visitors who are eligible to travel to the U.S. without a visa will encounter new procedures at the air and sea ports from Thursday. The Department of Homeland Security says the changes will enhance both the travel safety and security of American citizens. Travellers from 27 countries in the Visa Waiver Programme will be digitally finger-printed and photographed. Around 13 million visitors travel under the Visa Waiver Programme each year and they are allowed to stay for 90 days for business or pleasure by only using a passport. Australia, Brunei, France, Germany, Japan, Britain, Portugal and Singapore are exempted from the programme.
