Barnala greets Manmohan

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, greeted the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, on his birthday on Sunday.

In a telegram sent to the Prime Minister, the Governor said: "Please accept my heartiest felicitations and warm greetings on your birthday. I wish you long life and blessings of good health in the service of the nation and people," according to a press release issued by Raj Bhavan.

MP to attend UN session

Kakinada: Mallipudi Mangapati Pallamraju, MP, has been nominated one of the members of the Indian delegation, which will participate in the United Nations General Assembly session, to be held in New York from October 4. Pallamaraju is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology.

This is the first time that an MP from Kakinada being given representation in the delegation attending an international conference. B. Ramamurthy, chairman of the district Congress science and technology cell, and P. Siddardhi, chairman of the district SC cell, congratulated Mr. Pallamraju on his nomination.

TRS condition for campaign in Vidarbha

HYDERABAD: The Union Minister of State for Rural Development, A. Narendra, has said the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leadership will not campaign for the Congress in Vidarbha if the issue of Statehood for the region was not included in its manifesto for Maharashtra elections. However, the TRS will campaign for it in Mumbai and other parts of the State.

When contacted by reporters here on Sunday, Mr. Narendra said there was no clarity yet whether the Congress would include the issue of Vidarbha in its manifesto or not. But, if it did not figure, TRS leaders would not go to the region.

On the comments of former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, that the Congress would refer the Vidarbha and Telangana issues to the second States Reorganisation Commission, the Union Minister wanted the same to be declared by the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi. There was no point in Mr. Deshmukh or Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy saying that because they were not the decision-makers.

Vaikhanasa meet supports TTD on rituals

VISAKHAPATNAM: An all-India Vaikhanasa Agama Sadassu will be conducted in the next three months for which the Jeeyar Swamis of Pancharatra Agama are also welcome to take part, the Peethadhipathi of Sri Sarada Peetham in Chinamushidivada on the outskirts of the city, Swami Swaroopanandendra, has announced.

Addressing the valedictory function of the two-day all-Andhra Vaikhanasa Agama Sadassu here on Saturday, the Swami challenged the Jeeyars to `prove their mettle' at the national meet to be held either in Hyderabad or in Chennai, instead of finding fault with the rituals conducted at the Tirumala temple, which were in strict adherence to the Vaikhanasa Agama principles.

The two-day conference adopted resolutions endorsing the rituals at the Sri Venkateswara Swami temple in Tirumala and the decision to construct a mahaprakaram. There was nothing wrong in the removal of the thousand-pillar mandapam which could be rebuilt at a convenient place, the Sadassu opined.

It also resented the interference of Pancharatra Agama leaders in the activities of Vaikhanasa followers, and declared full support to the development activities of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) aimed at improving facilities to pilgrims. It also appealed to the State Government to safeguard the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition's policies at Tirumala.

Pollution control appellate authority reconstituted

HYDERABAD: The State Government has reconstituted the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Appellate Authority with C.V.N. Sastri, a retired judge of the High Court, as its chairman under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, and two others as members. Their term will be two years.

The members are M. Partha Saradhi, a retired scientist of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), and K. Krishna Rao, former chief environmental engineer, Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board. Orders reconstituting the authority were issued on Saturday. The two-year term of the authority with I. Panduranga Rao, a former judge of the High Court, had expired on May 31 this year, according to an official release.

Watery grave for four

NELLORE: Two children were drowned in a tank at Sydadupalli village in Rapur mandal on Saturday. The two, identified as T. Venkateswarlu (10) and B. Ajita Reddy (9), fell into the tank while they were playing in the area.

In Chittoor district, two boys -- Karthikeyan (8) and Karthik (5) -- sons of Kodandan, Chennai, were drowned in the Kanipakam temple tank on Sunday. The family had come to Kanipakam on pilgrimage.

RTC union lists demands

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC Transport Mazdoor Sangh has demanded total reimbursement of the concession being given by the corporation and implementation of the recommendations of the Andhra Pradesh Revenue Reforms Committee.

M. Nagewara Rao, general secretary of the sangh, in a statement on Sunday made some suggestions to the Government for protecting the interests of the corporation. The suggestions include reduction of sales tax to 4 per cent from the existing 19.33 per cent and curbing of illegal private operations.

Mr. Rao said the sangh would conduct awareness meetings throughout the State to bring pressure on the Government to concede its demands.

Social boycott alleged

NALGONDA: The president of the Andhra Pradesh Rajaka Vruttidaarula Sangham, Konduru Satyanarayana, has asked the police to arrest those responsible for the social boycott of washermen at Tirumalaipuram village in Karimnagar district.

In a press release here on Sunday, he alleged that the upper caste people had imposed a ban on the sales of milk, water, vegetables and medicines to washermen in the village.

Mr. Satyanaranayna alleged that washermen were being subjected to hardship in Kurnool, Prakasham, West Godavari, East Godavari, Cuddaph, Visakhapatnam and Karimnagar districts for demanding hike in wages.

3 drowned during immersion

NALGONDA: Three persons belonging to Sarampet thanda in Marrigudem mandal were drowned in Nagarjunasagar during the Ganesh immersion on Sunday.

According to the police, Ramawath Pandu (30), Madawath Bhiksham (23) and Vadthya Sateesh (16) were washed away when they were participating in the immersion at Shivalayam ghat in Nagarjunasagar. Bhiksham's body was fished out by villagers. Search was on trace the bodies of the other two.

Electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: Shaik Mahabub Basha alias Nanne (21), was electrocuted while laying a new electrical line, under Kaluvakatta electrical sub-station, between Butchampalle and Dasaripalle village in Porumamilla mandal on Sunday.

Samajwadi's satyagraha

NELLORE: The district unit of Samajwadi Party will launch a `satyagraha' movement at the Gandhi centre, Nellore, on October 2, as a protest against the country `lagging behind' in development, said the party's State General Secretary, V.V. Raju.

Sports competition

NELLORE: The district unit of Dalit Vidyarthi Sena will conduct sports competitions for students on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The events will be held at the CAM High School and include kho-kho, kabbadi, hockey and athletics.

Dalit Sena's demand

NELLORE: The district unit of Dalit Sena has demanded stringent action against landlords, who were allegedly involved in atrocities against weaker sections. The Sena also accused the police of being `indifferent' while taking action against influential persons.

Drowned

NIZAMABAD: Fifty-year-old Parvaiah of Padmajiwadi in Sadasivnagar mandal drowned in the village tank after immersing a Ganesh idol in it early this morning.

He is survived by wife and four sons, three of who are abroad.

Pushpa Yagam

TIRUPATI: `Pushpa Yagam' will be performed at the Lakshminarayana temple in Vepanjeri, 15 km from Chittoor, on September 28 at 10.30 a.m. About 1,000 kg of flowers of many varieties will be used for the yagam. Devotees can take part in the ritual by paying Rs.116 for `sankalpam'.

Polls to SC body

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati unit of Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Castes Welfare Association announced the election schedule to the body at Ambedkar Bhavan here. The last date for enrolment is October 4, that of filing of nominations is 5th, and of withdrawal of nominations is 6th. The poll date is October 10 (from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m).
