Disturbing

Sir, — It was disturbing to read that Iqbal Kaksar, brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, is contesting the Maharashtra Assembly polls. A person who was deported from UAE and is in jail for alleged involvement in crimes ranging from extortion to land grabbing, is contesting the polls. The day is not far off when Dawood himself will contest elections.

N. Sharath Chandra,
Bangalore

* * *

Sir, — The accusations and counter-accusations between the Government and the Opposition over `tainted' Ministers reminds me of a joke. A Scot was once travelling alone. Two Englishmen entered his railway compartment and sat on either side of him.

The first said to his friend that he was sitting beside a knave. His friend replied that he was sitting by the side of a thief. The unperturbed Scot said "Gentlemen my predicament is much worse, I am sitting by the side of both." Is our plight not similar to that of the Scot?

A.V. Srinivasan,
