`Enforce ban on new non-Kannada films'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 11. S.A. Chinne Gowda, vice-president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), on Friday urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to ensure that the "ban" on new non-Kannada films was implemented.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Chinne Gowda said that those who did little to support the Kannada film industry were raising a `hue and cry' over the non-release of Hindi films in the State. It was strange that cinema owners, not distributors of non-Kannada films, were protesting the ban. He criticised the plan of an exhibitor to bring artistes from neighbouring States for a procession in Bangalore to protest against the ban on new non-Kannada films.

Mr. Chinne Gowda claimed that Kannada films were promoting Kannada language and culture almost on a par with the Department of Kannada and Culture. He said Kannadigas living in cities such as Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad could not see Kannada films as cinemas there did not screen them. Even in Bangalore, they were deprived of Kannada films as most of the cinema owners were non-Kannadigas and did not screen the films.
