Humanity, impartiality, independence, voluntary service and utility are some of the fundamental principles of the Red Cross Society. It has become a people's movement in extending a helping hand to the affected, poor and downtrodden during a crisis. Students should work for the welfare of the society and mankind. This appeal was made at Youth Red Cross Day celebrations held at the Hajee Karutha Rawther Howdia College at Uthamapalayam in Theni district recently. Rotary club members distributed dictionaries to poor students as part of educational assistance.
Renewable energy should be properly tapped for sustainable development and it should be eco-friendly in preserving environment. This was highlighted at a seminar on renewable energy for sustainable development held at the Gandhigram Rural Institute at Gandhigram in Dindigul district recently. The Director for Rural Energy Centre, S. Ramasamy, said the Centre was spending Rs.87,000 crores for importing petroleum products. This amount could be diverted for utilisation of natural resources in the country. Proper utilisation of non-conventional and renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, biomass and agriculture waste would certainly lead to self-sufficiency and sustainable development. Social participation was also necessary to manage natural resources.
As part of Onam celebrations, students of the Sree Ayyappa College for Women at Chunkankadai in Kanyakumari district visited Balamandir Kamaraj Trust Children's Home at Irulappapuram near Nagercoil and distributed new clothes and sweets to the inmates. They arranged `sadya' (feast) to them.
Team building is the buzzword in modern day administration and that was the topic for a guest lecture organised by the Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi. A teaching faculty from the Business Administration, ANJA College Sivakasi, M. Rajasekaran, explained the concept of misunderstanding among the team members and how it could be sorted out, playing a management game. He laid a stress on the team leader, identifying the potentialities of his team members. For the team members, he said, it was important to develop a positive attitude and not to blame others for failure.
