Convicts' release

Sir,_ Mujib Ahmad, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing Additional Superintendent of Police, Krishna Prasad, and his gunman, was released from the Visakhapatnam Central Prison. Releasing prisoners, especially life convicts, en masse on Independence Day is a matter of concern.

One wonders how the Government took this decision at a time when the President of India refused to entertain the mercy petition of Dhananjoy Chatterjee who was hanged to death on the eve of the Independence Day.

Keep hotels

Sir,_ The arrest of some owners of lodging houses along with prostitutes and pimps recently in the city is commendable. Such dwellings have been harbouring crimes of late.

Also, patients with communicable diseases stay at these lodges when they come to Visakhapatnam for treatment in reputed hospitals. Complete lack of hygiene in the rooms and environs is a cause of worry in this context.

Even the bed sheets are not changed or washed. If any inmates have infectious diseases, the authorities concerned like the Chief Medical Officer of Health in the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation are not informed by the owners either.

Since this is a season of epidemics, the lodging houses should be checked and appropriate action taken. The VMC Commissioner is empowered to close down a lodging house in the event of infectious diseases.

Time for civic changes

Sir,_ After years of neglect, the Gajuwaka Municipality and the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) had laid a road connecting the Rajiv Centre at Old Gajuwaka and the Kanithi Road.

Two years later, the VUDA constructed a culvert on the drain in the middle of the road. But the road is still left without a blacktop though there is no other road to Old Gajuwaka Junction.

On the newly constructed drain in Gajuwaka, there are no proper concrete slabs. Those placed are uneven, posing threat to vehicles. Another problem is the encroachment of pavements by hawkers.

It is time the authorities took measures to redesign the Old and New Gajuwaka Junctions for smooth flow of traffic.

Start new bus service

Sir,_ The bus route no: 400 T run by the Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation every half-an-hour connecting major junctions of Visakhapatnam city with sectors of Steel Township has proved useful to the commuters.

The RTC authorities are also requested to introduce this service from 9 a.m. since this will be much helpful to residents of Steel Plant area who work in the city.

VMC's quick response

Sir,_ I am glad to inform you that after a letter appeared in these columns on August 9, immediate action was taken and a tap connection installed on August 13 by the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (VMC) authorities. I thank the VMC for its quick response.

Stern stance on TTD needed

Sir,_ It is unfortunate that the Tridandi Srimannarayana Jeeyar Swami should resort to threat of coercion and hunger strike to have his demands met.

It is equally sad that the Endowments Minister and the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) Chairman should bow to his dictates so quickly.

Its decision is now challenged by the Vykhanasa community, particularly the priests and archakas. One wonders how the Jeeyar Swami is competent to interfere in the affairs of TTD temple, which was established in accordance with Vykahanasa Agama.

The Government should interact with scholars well-versed in Vykhanasa Agama and arrive at a prudent decision.

Also, a commission of enquiry with scholars and jurists may be set up to give an unbiased report. Cases of this type are recognised as civil rights and there are instances where judicial decisions were rendered.

In fact, when the Government decided to hand over TTD Kalyanamandapams, the Rate Payers' Association moved the court and revoked the decision.
