Towards a chequered career abroad

The Career Guidance Cell of the Yadava College organised a programme on August 9 on `student progression to higher education in Australia' for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Students were enlightened on an overview of study life in Australia by Benjamin Cass, Director of Students Services Inter-National, Australia, and Darren Ray, Chief Operations Officer.

Mr. Cass said Indian students were being given freedom to live and lead in Australia without any compromise on their likes, culture and customs. They also had the freedom of selecting their own subject modules and the country offered good courses on information technology and management at affordable cost.

Dianne Thompson, Director, International Programme, said the diploma courses of Australian universities were globally recognised and students could avail themselves of a part-time career opportunity during the study period.

There was also a scope for permanent employment to those graduates with distinction, she said and also informed about scholarship facilities.

The Principal, G. Thiruvasagam, said the Yadava College periodically organised career guidance programmes, inviting experts and advisors from abroad. He also focused on education loans that enabled a student from middle class to go abroad for higher studies.

The final year student of M.S (IT), Mahalakshmi, told the Australian guests about how she gained confidence to pursue higher education. P. S. Navaraj, staff advisor of the career guidance cell, spoke.

A combined annual training camp is being conducted at the Agricultural College and Research Institute for National Cadet Corps cadets from Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

The camp, conducted by 7(TN) BN NCC, commenced on August 3 and will be held till August 14. It has the cadets taking part in the inter-group Thal Sainik competition. The cadets are representing six NCC groups of Madras A, Madras B, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Pondicherry.

They will take part in competitions, including obstacle course and advanced rifle shooting, besides a point-to-point march. A final team of the cadets will be selected for the all-India camp to be held in New Delhi, later.

Major A. D. Tensingh, camp commandant, along with five regular army officers, associate NCC officers and others are involved in training the cadets.

Over 200 senior division cadets, 77 from junior division, 25 senior wing cadets and 10 from the junior wing are attending the camp. In addition, selection for the Republic Day contingent of Madurai Group is also being held.

The BBA students of the N. M. S. S. Vellaichamy Nadar College recently had an interaction meeting with two eminent entrepreneurs — Rajesh Sood, vice-president, Motor Parts Association, Ludhiana, and Rajini Sood.

The two entrepreneurs told the students that developing confidence, risk-bearing ability, innovation and honesty were the pre-requisites for entrepreneurship.

Mr. Rajesh Sood said money was not a hindrance to start a business and what was needed was initiative and perseverance.

T. Vanniarajan, placement coordinator, organised the event. Later, the students had an interaction with V. Neethi Mohan, managing director of Vaigai Industries India Limited, who kindled the desire to become an entrepreneur rather than a job-hunter after graduation.

The NSS volunteers of the Wakf Board College visited the blind school at K. K. Nagar as part of their NSS activities and provided lunch to all children on August 2.

The college students collected money to do service for the visually impaired. The activities planned are regular visits, health checkup and need-based service. The visit was organised by Sikkanthar Batcha, NSS programme officer, and Varshaa Trust.

Papaya, a tropical fruit, is grown abundantly in India. It is unique as it is a good source of betacarotene, which gets converted into vitamin A in the human system.

This vitamin prevents blindness among children. Papaya, a treasure trove of nutrients, is not fully utilised by the people.

Hence, in an attempt to create an awareness of the nutritional significance of papaya and to process it into value-added products, a two-day training programme was organised in the Department of Family Resource Management, Home Science College and Research Institute for the Gramavidiyal self-help group members.

Hands on training in papaya-based food products such as papaya squash, papaya candy, papaya bar, mixed fruit jam was given to the participants.

M.R. Premalatha, principal investigator, P. Vennila, co-principal investigator, organised the programme.

The training programme was inaugurated by S. Parvathi, Dean (in-charge), Home Science College and Research Institute.
