TAKING A break from academic activities the students of the CSI College of Engineering at Ketti near Ooty `extended a helping hand' the other day to espouse a noble cause.
With the institution's Voluntary Blood Donors Club and Youth Red Cross unit organising a one-day voluntary blood donation camp with the help of the Coimbatore-based K.G. Hospital, over two hundred students and about 25 teachers donated blood. The camp was inaugurated by the Vice-Principal of the college, T.V.Christy.
A TRAINING camp-cum-RDC/TSC/VSC selection camp was conducted by the 4(TN) Battalion NCC of NGM College at Pollachi, recently. The camp was organised by Commandant Lt.Col.R.Sivaji and about 650 NCC cadets from various schools attended the camp.
Cadets from six districts namely Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Salem and Dharmapuri participated. The camp aimed at training cadets for the Republic Day camp and Army Wing camps.
Competitions like guard mounting, squad drill, flag area, line area, volleyball and cultural events were conducted. Social service activities like AIDS awareness rally and traffic control were also organised. Lectures on communication skills, environment awareness, leadership qualities and first aid were delivered.
At the valedictory function, the secretary of the college S.K. Kalyanasundaram, advised the students to contribute their mite to make India a super power by 2020.
He also stressed the importance of time management. He gave away the prizes for various competitions. The students presented a variety of cultural programmes like solo and group song, dance, skit, etc.
NATIONAL SERVICE Scheme (NSS) programme officers from 65 colleges in Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris districts gathered at Bharathiar University in Coimbatore a few days ago for a `capacity-building' programme.
The Collector, S. Kosalaraman, released the NSS handbook.
The Vice-Chancellor, S. Sivasubramanian, explained the importance of NSS activities in social development.
At a seminar that followed, there were talks on nation building, the role of non-Governmental organisation, special camps, community development, NSS activities and maintenance of accounts.
