Udhay, Ashwini bag titles

MYSORE, AUG. 8. Top-seed Udhay S. Athreya (UBI) and second-seeded B.M. Ashwini (UBI) registered good wins over their respective rivals and clinched the coveted men's and women's singles titles in the Gita Hirranniah Memorial State ranking table tennis championships 2004 here on Sunday.

Udhay S. Athreya playing an attacking game, registered a 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-3 win over Anirban Tarafdar (Canara Bank) and bagged the men's singles title.

B.M. Ashwini (UBI) got the better of top-seeded V. Ranjitha (JTTA) 11-9, 14-12, 11-6, 11-8 to bag the women's sinles title.

Top-seeded C.P. Karthik (WC) registered a well-earned win over Bharath M. Urs (Horizon TT) at 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-3 to clinch the junior boys' singles title.

The Mysore Sports Academy honoured three senior Karnataka players, Vasanth Bharadwaj, C.R. Anand and G.K. Vishwanth with a plaque and a citation. The prizes to the winners were given away by Mr. Suresh Shankar, MD-Finance, Indo-American Hybrid Seeds Pvt. Limited, Bangalore.

Men's singles: Final: Udhay S. Athreya (UBI) bt Anirban Tarafdar (CB) 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-3. Semifinals: Udhay S. Athreya bt G. Ravishankar 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5; Anirban Tarafdar bt C.S. Badri 11-5, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4. Quarterfinals: Udhay S. Ahtreya bt Karthik M Urs 11-3, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7; G. Ravishankar bt G.K. Vishwanath 11-9, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9; Anirban Tarafdar bt C.P. Karthik 11-7, 11-7, 12-10, 11-5; C.S. Badri bt C.S. Suresh 9-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-6, 11-3, 11-6.

Women's singles: Final: B.M. Ashwini bt V. Ranjitha 11-9, 14-12, 11-6, 11-8. Semifinals: V. Ranjitha bt S. Bhavana 11-6, 11-8, 11-4, 11-8; B.M. Ashwini bt S.R. Nikitha 11-8, 8-11, 11-1, 12-10, 11-1. Quarterfinals: V. Ranjitha bt Shamika V Desai 8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8; S. Bhavana bt N. Poojitha 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9; S.R. Nikitha bt R. Madhuri 15-13, 11-3, 11-9, 11-6; B.M. Ashwini w/o. Apoorva Ramesh.

Junior boys:

Final: C.P. Karthik bt Bharath M. Urs 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-3.
