TIRUCHI, AUG. 5. A postgraduate girl student of the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, was stabbed to death on the campus this morning. A student of a neighbouring college, who was apparently in love with her, was arrested immediately.
Akila, I MCA student, was attacked with a knife allegedly by A. Bharadwaj, a final year B.E. Mechanical Engineering student of the SASTRA Deemed University, in front of the computer laboratory of the Department of Computer Applications around 8.30 a.m. just before classes were to begin.
She died on the spot and the body lay in a pool of blood beside a staircase. The police removed it to hospital for post mortem.
The fathers of both the victim and the accused were employees of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, and the families were residing in the same locality.
Akila and Bharadwaj were said to have been friends from childhood. The police said he recently approached Akila's parents asking them to give her in marriage to him, but he was told that the proposal could wait until after she finished her studies.
First year MCA classes had begun just six days ago in the NIT and the murder left the students and the faculty dazed. The Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi (Rural), P. Thamarai Kannan, visited the scene and conducted enquiries.
