Chennai emerges overall champion

COIMBATORE, JULY 31. Chennai boys and girls tallied 541 points in all to claim the overall championship on the final day of the Tamil Nadu inter-district junior athletics championship at the Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.

The city boys bagged the team championship collecting 273 points, while the girls fought hard only to lose the status to Erode by a mere six-point margin. Erode, thanks to Divya's splendid performance, took the championship honours in girls, collecting 274 points.

Divya was the lone athlete in the championship to have bagged four individual gold medals. Her efforts also fetched her the under-18 individual championship.

Of the six individual medals at stake, Chennai bagged three, out of which two came in the boys' section.

The results: Overall championship: Chennai (541 pts), Erode (296). Team championship (Boys): Chennai (273), Tiruchi (210). Girls: Erode (274), Chennai (268). Individual championship (Boys): U-16: A. Ramakrishnan (Sivagangai). U-18: Amalanathan (Chennai). U-20: Lawson (Chennai). Girls U-16: Radhika (Chennai). U-18: Divya (Erode). U-20: Jhansi Rani (Namakkal).
