`JD(S) has not changed stand'

Bangalore July 14. The Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, said today that the Janata Dal (S) had not forgotten the charges against the previous government it had made during the election campaign. Addressing presspersons here, he said that the JD(S) had demanded action against former Ministers and annulment of some of the decisions taken by previous government. The party had not changed its stand on issues, he said and added that it was committed to fulfilling the promises made to the people during elections. Mr. Sindhia said that the JD(S) was maintaining its separate identity though it was part of the coalition. Senior leaders of the party had held a meeting to discuss issues including the alleged payment of Rs. 20 crore to the former Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sangram Singh, for handing over it to forest brigand Veerappan.

KPSC urged to issue orders

BANGALORE JULY 14. Candidates from the merit category have urged the Karnataka Public Service Commission to issue appointment orders and complete the process of appointment of first division clerks in accordance with a Supreme Court order in this regard. In May 2003, the apex court held appointments made under the "rural weightage" scheme as illegal and directed the State Government to make appointments on the basis of merit. In a statement on Tuesday, 16 candidates, awaiting appointment orders, said that though other departments such as Education and Police had completed the process of appointment, the KPSC was yet to complete it. The candidates have said that if the KPSC does not complete the process, they will file a contempt petition before the Supreme Court.

Farmer commits suicide

HASSAN JULY 14. Anne Gowda (55) of Ullangala Kurubarakopplu village in Arkalgud taluk reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison in his fields on Monday. It is learnt that he was unable to repay a loan of Rs. 10,000 that he had taken from a bank and another loan of Rs. 30,000 taken from a moneylender to cultivate land. The Arkalgud police have registered a case.

Notices to panchayat members

SHIMOGA July 14. The State Election Commission has issued notices to the eight members of the Shimoga Zilla Panchayat, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, to appear before it in Bangalore on Saturday in connection with the inquiry to be conducted following a complaint from the Shimoga District Congress Committee President, Mir Azeez Ahmed, questioning their defection. Mr. Ahmed, in his complaint, had said that these members, who were elected to the zilla panchayat on the Congress ticket, had worked for the BJP in the last Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the district, and he had asked the Election Commission to disqualify them as members as they had violated the Local Bodies Anti-defection Act of 1987.

Subsidy sought for films

Bangalore July 14. The Karnataka Film Producers' Association today urged the Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, to consider giving subsidy for all Kannada films barring "remakes" and not restrict it to some films. A delegation led by the association president, Basant Kumar Patil, which met the Minister, said in a memorandum that the Kannada film producers needed assistance.

Online filing of PAN applications

Bangalore July 14. Applying for a permanent account number (PAN) for filing income tax returns has been made easier. The Income Tax Department has provided a facility for online filing of PAN applications through its website, www.incometaxindia.gov.in. After the data is entered and submitted online, an acknowledgement form containing a unique acknowledgement number can be printed. The applicants should enter their signature and a colour photo on the acknowledgement form and send it to NSDL, Mumbai, along with proof of identity and address and a demand draft or cheque for Rs. 65 towards processing fees.

Housing scheme for minorities

BANGALORE JULY 14. Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation Limited plans to launch a scheme to help poor families among the minority communities to own houses. The Chairman of the corporation, Obaidulla Sharief, has said that the proposed scheme, "Dhukan Makhan," will be implemented with the assistance of the National Minorities Development Corporation.

Loans will be extended to the minorities to buy houses. The corporation needs an assistance of Rs. 3.5 crores to implement the scheme. Mr. Sharief has urged the State Government to allocate more funds this year to implement welfare schemes. Last year, the allocation was reduced from Rs. 14.09 crore to Rs. 13.19 crore. Only Rs. 12.12 crore was released. In a press statement, Mr. Sharief has demanded that the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, extend budgetary allocation for "Ariyu," an educational loan scheme of the corporation. The Government approved the scheme to improve the standard of education among minorities.

To bring minorities on a par with other communities, the corporation plans to extend educational loans to those who have enrolled for professional courses. Mr. Sharief has urged the Government to sanction a grant of Rs. 3.25 crore for the scheme.

Two held

SIRSI JULY 14. Two men, who tried to rob a woman of her chain, were caught by villagers after a hot chase. The incident took place at Guddekana village in Siddapur on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Uday Thimmappa of Sagar and Prakash Narasimha of Ripponpet.

During interrogation, the police discovered that the motorcycle the accused had used was stolen from Basavraj Balindrapur of Sorab taluk. The police are investigating.

Elected

MANGALORE JULY 14. Yogish Kumar Jeppu and Govardhan K. Shetty have been elected president and secretary, respectively, of Lions Club, Mangalore, according to a release.

B.S. Vinod Rao and K. Arvind Shenoy have been elected vice-presidents.

Accident

BIDAR JULY 14. A two-wheeler rider, who crashed into a young blackbuck while it was crossing the road on Monday, died while he was being taken to a hospital in Hyderabad. According to the police, Syed Isad Mian Patel, 25, hit the animal on the Bidar-Mannalli Road. The blackbuck died on the spot and the pillion rider, Ahmed, received serious injuries. The Bagdal police have registered a case.

Workshop

BIDAR JULY 14. Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College is organising a two-day national workshop on "Digital Image Processing and Recent Advancements," in Bidar on July 17 and 18.

V. Shridhar, Registrar, Evaluation, Vishweshvariah Technological University, will inaugurate the workshop, and B.S. Dhaliwal will deliver the keynote address. Experts from premier institutes across the country will participate, a press release said.

Banned

BIDAR JULY 14. In the wake of an impending fodder scarcity in the district, the transport, sale, or movement of fodder from Bidar to other districts or states has been banned.

The growth of crops had been affected following scanty rainfall, and there was a possibility of fodder scarcity, a press release from the Deputy Commissioner said.

Arrested

HASSAN JULY 14. A special team, led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, H.M. Umesh, has arrested three people in connection with the chain snatching incidents that were on the rise in the city. The team recovered gold chains worth Rs. 1.5 lakh and three two-wheelers that were used to commit the crimes.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Panduranga H. Rane, the Superintendent of Police, said that the arrested were Guruva, alias Guru Jogi (25), Venkatesha (30), and Krishna, alias Krishna Jogi, from Lakshmipura village in Mandya district. He said that one of their accomplices, Yellayya, managed to escape. Mr. Rane said that the three were arrested near Housing Board Colony on Tuesday.

Cash prizes

BIDAR JULY 14. Students from Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes in Bhalki taluk who have passed SSLC and post-matric examinations with a first class, will be given cash prizes.

According to a press release, details and applications can be had from the social welfare office in Bhalki. Completed application forms should be submitted before July 30.

Grievances

BIDAR JULY 14. The Superintendent of Posts will listen to the grievances of postal pensioners during a Pension Adalat at the head post office in Bidar on July 20. Those who have grievances can apply to be a part of the adalat before July 18, a press release said.

Ration

BIDAR JULY 14. Families with yellow ration cards and Antyodaya Anna cards will be distributed sugar for July. 2520 quintals of levy sugar had been released for the purpose, a press release said. Each cardholder would get 3 kg of sugar, the release said.

Courses in web design

MYSORE JULY 14. The University Computer Centre in association with ECIT will offer courses on web design and accounting. According to a release, the centre also offers courses such as C, C++, and DTP. Details could be had from the Systems Manager of the centre, Library building, Manasagangotri or on phone 2514824. The last date for registration is July 17.

MYSORE JULY 14. The Youth Hostels Association of India has organised a trek to Bheemana Kindi, the natural arch near Halagur on July 18. Interested persons may contact the association on phone 2341419.

Fellowship

MYSORE JULY 14. The Association of Plastic Surgeons of India has conferred R.G. Saraiaya's International travelling fellow award for the year 2004 on the Mysore-based plastic surgeon, H.V. Sathish. A release said that one plastic surgeon would be selected each year from India. He has been invited to visit the plastic surgery unit at Chelmsford, Essex, in the United Kingdom for six weeks. The unit specialises in management of hand injuries and microvascular techniques.
