MYSORE, JULY 14. The doyen of South Indian cinema M.N. Basavarajaiah passed away here this morning following a prolonged illness. He was 92. Mr. Basavarajaiah was admitted to a private hospital on May 27 after he was diagnosed with pneumonia, family sources said. Hailed as a legendary figure in the Kannada film industry, Mr. Basavarajaiah set up Premier Studios in the sprawling Chittaranjan Mahal in Mysore in 1954 and produced several movies. The studio was a "Mecca" for film producers who shot movies in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Tulu, and Konkani. A number of Hindi film hits such as Sholay and Pakeezah, were also shot there. Great directors such as B.R. Pantulu, Puttanna Kanagal, Mani Ratnam, and V. Balachander directed their films here.
