JOB-ORIENTED degree courses are much in demand these days, with most of the city colleges offering a variety of programmes. Over 500 seats are available in colleges here under the self-financing scheme initiated by the Mahatma Gandhi University for the ensuing academic year. The number of students opting for career-oriented courses has increased, going by the demand for such programmes in various colleges. The Ernakulam Maharajas College offers courses in B.Sc. Instrumentation and B.Sc. Environmental Science. Thirty seats each are available in both these programmes. Popular courses at the St. Teresa's College include B.A. programmes in Communicative English, French and Bharatanatyam. The college also offers a degree programme in Computer Applications. There are 30 seats each available for degree courses in Communicative English and Computer Applications. Only 15 students are admitted to the Bharatanatyam course despite an allotted intake of 50. The intake has been restricted to give full attention to the 15 students admitted for the three-year programme. An aptitude test will be conducted for students applying for the B.A. Bharatanatyam course. The list of candidates found eligible for degree courses offered by St. Teresa's college will be published on June 17. The admission process will begin from June 23. Classes are expected to begin from June 28 onwards. The Sacred Heart College, Thevara, offers four job-oriented degree courses. The courses include B.Sc. in Computer Applications and Industrial Chemistry. The college also offers a B.A. programme in Copy Editing under the self-financing scheme. The number of seats available for each programme is 30. The St. Albert's College offers B.Sc. programmes in Industrial Fish and Fisheries, Vocational Chemistry and Aquaculture. The intake for the Industrial Fish and Fisheries course is 25 while the number of seats available for Vocational Chemistry is 24. There are 30 seats available for Aquaculture course. The college offers three-year advanced diploma programmes in Actuarial Sciences, Media Studies and Documentation. The University Grants Commission sponsors the advanced diploma programmes available at St. Albert's college. The Bharata Mata College, Trikkakara, offers four career-oriented courses for students. The courses include B.Com. Travel and Tourism, B.A. Hindi, B.A. Malayalam (with main focus on Journalism) and B.Sc. Physics (Computer Applications as a main area of study). The sanctioned intake for each programme offered by the college is between 30 and 35 seats. The Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery, offers a degree course in Social Work. The three-year course is divided into six semesters. The course has been designed to meet the demand for qualified and trained social workers in welfare and developmental agencies in the country. The number of seats available for this course is 30. The Cochin College offers a career oriented B.Sc. programme in Botany with Plant Biotechnology as a vocational subject. The college also offers a B.Com programme with specialisation in marketing. The number of seats available for each course is 24. The Union Christian College, Aluva, offers B.Sc. courses in Biotechnology, Computer Maintenance and Electronics and Computer Science. The sanctioned intake for Biotechnology and Computer Maintenance and Electronics courses is 30. The number of seats available for Computer Science course is 24. By G. Krishnakumar
