Sibal takes up problems facing Chandni Chowk

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 8. An all-night food street in the heart of Chandni Chowk here is clearly not the only thing that the new Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Member of Parliament from Chandni Chowk, Kapil Sibal, had in mind when he spoke of decongesting the cultural hub of the Capital and bringing back its old glory.

His first meeting with senior officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and other administrative bodies this past week-end saw the Minister getting down to work. Discussed during the meeting were various issues including setting up of a joint inspection team with the Archaeological Survey of India to identify sites that could be used to solve the parking problem in and around the Chandni Chowk area.

One of the core issues discussed at the meeting, some of the suggestions made in the meeting for easing the parking problem were improvement of the corridor at the S.P. Mukherjee Marg opposite Old Delhi railway station, widening and reconstruction of the Calcutta Bridge, development of parking area near Delhi Gate of the Red Fort and traffic regulation in the area.

Also discussed was the desilting of barrel from Pili Kothi to Ajmeri Gate and from Lahori Gate to Red Fort and the replacement of the old sewer and water line and construction of sewer line in Parade Ground. Urging the MCD Commissioner to start working on the discussed issues, the Minister also asked the officers present to ensure that the progress of the projects was reviewed regularly.
