DUTA up in arms again

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 27. With a day to go before Delhi University's Academic Council meets for a final clearance to the much-debated B.A. (Pass) course, withdrawal of M. Com. classes from the South Campus and discussion on draft ordinances for the School of Open Learning, the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) is up in arms again.

This time, the issue is not just the B.A. course which the University officials say will be implemented because it has already been passed by the Executive Council, but also the likely withdrawal of M. Com. classes from the South Campus and the Campus of Open learning.

While opposing the proposed closure of the courses at the South Campus, DUTA today said it was also against the proposal for a reduction in the number of seats being offered in the course. According to the University Registrar, Atindra Sen, the proposal has been brought on the basis of the lack of manpower and infrastructure in South Campus. "It is a temporary withdrawal of the course that has been proposed. Once the vacant seats have been filled and the needed resources have been obtained, we will go back to the South Campus with the course once again,'' Mr. Sen said on Thursday.

Perhaps the last meeting before the beginning of the new academic session, the Academic Council meeting is likely to see much excitement on Friday.

The DUTA has also opposed the proposal on the School of Open Learning as listed in the agenda of the Academic Council on the plea that it takes a complete turn on the earlier proposed plan. But the University once again dismissed DUTA's fears by maintaining that Friday's meetings is centred around the draft ordinance for the School of Open Learning, a constituent of the Campus of Open Learning, to look into the details of the possible governance structure and other aspects like the staff council.

Also likely to be discussed during the meeting are the revised courses of B.Sc. (Hons), Geology, Anthropology and Computer Science among others.
