Falling standards

Sir, — This has reference to the news report that a British drug firm has been accused of using orphans for HIV trials (April 5). Some other reports in recent times such as Dawood undergoing cosmetic surgery, and a test-tube baby for a 63-year-old, reflect some disturbing trends.

Breach of the universal medical code of ethics, manipulation of medical science and technology, and scant concern for those used in medical experiments, are rampant all over the world.

That such incidents cannot take place without the connivance of doctors is what makes the situation alarming.

S. Selvakumaran,
Erode, T.N.
