COIMBATORE, APRIL 5. Poor Economy and Children's Education Society (PEACE) inaugurated an orphanage and home for destitute women at Kalapatti, here recently. According to Raman Rao, Director, PEACE Home, it would shelter children aged between one week and seven years apart from destitute women. "Orphans are seldom recognised in society. In spite of being qualified, not many are given suitable jobs because of the stigma. The home has been started to give due recognition to them," Mr. Rao noted. At present, there were 70 children in the home, taken care of by 45 workers. Most of them were girls who came through the cradle baby scheme. Besides, many mothers left their children at the doorsteps of the home and fled. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) investigated the cases of such children. An advertisement was given in the newspapers and if there were no takers, then the baby became the inmate of the home. The children were given in adoption after scrutiny of family background and income. Social workers checked up on the foster parents once in three months. The Secretary, Department of Social Welfare, C.K.Gariyali inaugurated the home. The District Collector, N. Muruganandam, presided over.
