Coimbatore
By Our Staff Reporter
COIMBATORE, APRIL 5. The State Bank of India's project to network its branches will be over by the end of this year. The Coimbatore module, comprising 128 retail network branches and six commercial branches, has been chosen for the pilot project, W Chanti Babu, Deputy General Manager of Coimbatore module, said today. Talking to presspersons here today, Mr. Chanti Babu said the investment to connect all the SBI branches was around Rs. 500 crores. "This is in tune with the emerging trend of `customer in the branch' from the traditional `customer and the branch' approach," he added. Initially, Core Banking Solution (inter-connectivity of branches) would be introduced in all the branches in metros, which basically dealt with high cost and high value advancements. "CBS will give more scope for identifying new business avenues," he said. Responding to a recent study conducted on staff strength, the DGM said that SBI would continue to recruit tech-savvy people in place of retirees. " For marketing and collection of Non-Performing Assets (NPA) we need people to approach our clients directly. So, there will not be any surplus," he pointed out. To speed up processing of loan applications and to give time for branches to concentrate on exploiting business opportunities, special centralised credit processing cell would be introduced at the zonal office in another fortnight. Accepting that there was a persistent drought condition in four districts of the Coimbatore module, he said there wasn't any increase in the NPA level. "We rephased the loan repayment system for the farming sector by providing ample time without modifying the interest rates," the DGM said. To concentrate on technological development of the industry, the bank had chosen pump industries in the region. "We have also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) for upgradation of sago industry," he added.
