Nigeria denies Pakistan offer included n-power

ABUJA (NIGERIA), MARCH 4. Nigeria's Defence Ministry said a top Pakistan military official offered unspecified assistance to the Nigeria's armed forces, but a defence spokesman later retracted the statement that the offer included "nuclear power."

Pakistani officials denied offering to share their nation's nuclear capability.

"This is a baseless story and a conspiracy to hurt our image," the Pakistan Information Minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, said in Islamabad on Thursday.

In a communiqué on Wednesday, Nigeria's Defence Ministry claimed that the chairman of Pakistan's Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Muhammad Aziz Khan, had said during a visit to Nigeria that Pakistan "is working out the dynamics of how they can assist Nigeria's armed forces to strengthen its military capability and to acquire nuclear power."

However, Nwachukwu Bellu, the spokesman who signed the statement, on Thursday said that "it was a mistake" for the communiqué to have mentioned nuclear power as an area of possible cooperation. — AP
