KCBC observes `Anti-liquor Day'

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, JAN. 25. The `Anti-liquor Day' observance organised by the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) of the Varapuzha Archdiocese was inaugurated by the State general secretary of the KCBC Madyavirudha Samithy, Paul Karachira, here today.

Fr. Karachira expressed concern over the increasing number of youths taking to liquor.

All members of society had a responsibility to provide liquor-addicts with facilities for de-addiction, he said. Sebastian Vattaparambil, director of the samithy, presented the plan of action for the year 2004. The programmes included opening de-addiction clinics with the help of church members, a centralised counselling unit, awareness classes in schools and dioceses, declaration of families who have given up liquor as `liquor-free families' and organising frequent meetings of families of men who have given up liquor.

The samithy also decided to organise dharnas and seminars to spread the message that liquor affects families. There is a proposal to begin a savings scheme aimed at the wives of liquor-addicts and women who work for de-addiction.
