`Poets should give expression to finer dimensions of life'

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, JAN. 25. The poet, K. G. Sankarappillai, has said that for a poet observing, comprehending and expressing the micro-level dimensions of social and personal lives is the genuine political activity and not making loud speeches for a particular party.

Inaugurating a young poets' camp jointly organised by the All India Radio and Ankanam cultural forum here today, Prof. Sankarappillai said it took about ten years for him to recognise the significance of the finer dimensions of poetry.

"Along with many other writers in the 1970s, I too used to think that aligning with a particular political party is the only expression of politics. But later we realised that there is a finer dimension to our daily social life beyond what we experience through our senses and knowing and expressing that universe can bring out the subtle brilliance of politics. Knowing the subtleties of social life is knowing the period itself and the most important function of a poet is registering the period that one lives in,'' he said. Common sense and capacity to discern the finer dimensions of time and space were the most important assets of a poet, Prof. Sankarappillai said.
