NOIDA, JAN. 17. Police fired in the air and resorted to a lathicharge to quell a violent mob in a Greater Noida area as protests against the scrapping of the Gautam Budh Nagar district took a violent turn today. Amid a shutdown for the fourth day, at least one police post and a police jeep were set ablaze at Pari Chowk by protestors. Hundreds of demonstrators, shouting slogans against the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, fought pitched battles with policemen. In Tugalpur village, police opened fire in the air in "self defence" after a mob attacked them. Nobody was injured.
