CHENNAI, JAN. 17. Kerala State Electricity Board scored a 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-23 victory over the women's defending champion Southern Railway, Chennai, on the second day of the Nutrine Maha Lacto Super League volleyball at the Nehru indoor stadium here on Saturday. Railways saved three match points, but still lost because of the tenacity shown by the visitor. Gisha Thomas is undoubtedly the best woman spiker in the country. But what made KSEB click today was its sustained block in which Sheeba, Salitha Prasad and Aswini Sasi Kumar excelled. It was a close call even in the first set for the Railway side. KSEB reduced the lead from 15-19 to 23-24. But Gayathri saved the situation for the Railway with a quick finish at the net. However, the Kerala team turned the tables on the rival in the next set in which it took an 18-12 lead with steady block and strong spiking. Salitha and Ashwini combined well in double block that blunted the attack of Vini Thomas, Gayathri and Geetha Raju. Earlier, Haryana Small Industries Development Corporation (HSIDC) sounded a warning that it should not be taken lightly. Today it crushed South Central Railway, Secunderabad, 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 for its second successive win. Kochi Refineries men post win Kochi Refineries men defeated ONGC, Dehradun, 25-13, 25-23, 28-26. Even in the final phases of the second and third sets in which ONGC came close to toppling it the Kerala team managed to keep its cool and stayed on course to wrap up the match. The results: Men: HSIDC bt South Central Railway 25-22, 25-14, 25-20; Kochi Refineries bt ONGC 25-15, 25-23, 28-26; Indian Navy bt Income-Tax, Hyderabad 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11. Women: KSEB bt Southern Railway 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-23. Friday's result: SCR bt GKM Foundation 25-18, 25-14, 25-16.
