Leaders recall Hegde's contribution

BANGALORE, JAN. 12. A host of leaders, Ministers, and prominent personalities have mourned the death of the former Chief Minister, Ramakrishna Hegde.

Expressing shock over Mr. Hegde's death, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, M.V. Venkatappa, said in his death the country had lost a politician of high values.

The Minister for Public Works, Dharam Singh, said: "Mr. Hegde was a leader of the masses. He was also a great statesman who served the country in all capacities."

The former Railway Minister, C.K. Jaffer Sharief, MP, said: "With the death of Mr. Hegde, the country has lost a veteran politician and an able administrator who could read the pulse of the people. I offer my heartfelt condolences to members of the bereaved family."

The President of the State unit of the BJP, H.N. Ananth Kumar, and the party's leaders, B.S. Yediyurappa and Jagadish Shettar, said Mr. Hegde's contribution in the field of panchayat raj would be remembered for a long time.

The KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, said Mr. Hegde belonged to a family of freedom fighters.

He advocated Mahatma Gandhi's principles and fought for strengthening secularism. The AIPJD President, S.R. Bommai, G. Puttaswamy Gowda, V. Dhananjaya Kumar, K.H. Javare Gowda, MPs, the President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), Siddaramaiah, the Janata Dal (Secular) leader, P.G.R. Sindhia, and the Yuva Janata Dal leader, Sripad Renu, have also mourned Mr. Hegde's death.

P. Ramiah, veteran journalist and MLC, said Mr. Hegde strode like a colossus and left his mark on the field of public administration.

D.B. Chandre Gowda, A.B. Maalakaraddy, B. Ramanath Rai, M.L. Ustad, Vasanth Salian, K.M. Muniyappa, Baburao Chinchansur, R.V. Deshpande, B.S. Patil Sasanur, Ramalinga Reddy, and Allum Veerabhadrappa, Ministers, have also expressed grief over Mr. Hegde's death.

The Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, V. Srinivasa Prasad, the Minister of State for Railways, Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, the Chikkodi MP and former Minister, Ramesh Jigajinagi, the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council, V.R. Sudarshan, D.H. Shankaramurthy, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, N. Manjunath, Blasius D'Souza, and M.C. Nanaiah, MLCs, Yogish Bhat, MLA, G. Narayana Kumar, President, Kannada Chaluvali Kendra Samiti, Vaijnath Patil, K.B. Shanappa and Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur, former Ministers, R. Pradeep Kumar, Senior Vice-President, State unit of the Janata Party, Rajesh Gundu Rao, President, Yuva Janata Party, V.B. Coutinho, Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, T.P. Ramesh, AIPJD State General Secretary, P.R. Ramesh, Bangalore Mayor, G. Basavaraju, Deputy Mayor, G.C. Bayya Reddy, secretariat member, Communist Party of India (M), Haranhalli Ramaswamy, Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission, D.K. Chowta, General Secretary, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Sosale Jawaraiah, President, All-Karnataka Backward Classes Welfare Federation, V.S. Mohan, Ramakrishna Hegde Fans' Forum, K. Srinivasa Gowda, Indian Farmers' Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd., D.L. Jagadish, Bangalore Advocates' Association, Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala, Visvesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math of Udupi, Shantaveera Mahaswamy, seer of Kolada Math Mahasamsthana, Bangalore, the All-India Veerashiva Mahasabha President, Bheemanna Khandre, and the former MP and MLA, J.A. Fernandez, have also mourned the death of former Chief Minister.
