Though such an initiative was in the offing for quiet some time now, the Yogam authorities had restrained themselves from formalising the initiative so far, especially in the light of the difficulties faced by the Janakeeya Munnani, which was still in its early formative stage.
According to sources, the new initiative would not be directly championed by the Yogam. A Central trade union Socialist Trade Union Centre (STUC) had already been registered with the blessing of the Yogam leadership.
The new trade union being registered in Kottayam, Socialist Motor Thozhilali Union for the autorickshaw drivers would be affiliated to the STUC.
The new trade union would be inaugurated by the Yogam general secretary, Vellappally Natesan.
According to Yogam sources, the immediate reason for the setting up the Union could be the altercation between autodiviers belonging to the CITU and Yogam members during the last Sri Narayana guru Jayanthi Day celebrations here.
A section of the autorickshaw drivers had donned the Yogam flag on their vehicles, which was resented by their CITU counterparts. This had resulted in minor altercations at several areas.
It may be remembered that it was only a few weeks ago that the Yogam members and DYFI activists ended a month-long stand off at Kumarakom on the vexed issue of encroachment of the Vembanad Lake.
According to organisers of the new trade union, they already had nearly 300 persons seeking membership in the new union.
