The Valiathura police on October 4 arrested a British national, John Alfred Lovett, on charges of trying to board a commercial aircraft with two pistols.
According to official sources, the British citizen was detained by the security staff of the Sri Lankan airlines after an X-ray examination revealed two pistols in his hand-baggage. Mr. John was handed over to the Valiathura police. He was charged under sections 32 and 25 of the Arms Act. A police official said that the British national failed to declare the weapons found in the hand baggage at the airport. The accused also failed to produce the necessary documents required to prove that he was legally permitted to possess the pistols. Police said the weapons recovered from the accused bore no trademark.
Mr. John was produced before the court the same day and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody. He was later granted bail.
