By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE OCT. 30. Writer Baragur Ramachandrappa, poet H.S. Venkatesha Murthy, theatre and film personalities Prema Karanth and T.S. Nagabharana and film artiste Srinath figure in the list of 56 persons selected by the Karnataka Government for this year's Rajyotsava Award in recognition of contribution to their fields. Four institutions also feature in the list.

Announcing the awardees here today, the Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, said that it was based on "merit'' and political considerations had no role as reported in a section of the press. The committee constituted for selecting the awards had attempted to give a balanced regional representation.

The Department of Kannada and Culture had not invited applications for the awards, as it had no such tradition, she said. The awards, to be presented on Saturday, carry a gold medal, a citation, a shawl and a memento.
