A demonstration of the machine was watched by Ms. Jayalalithaa, the PWD Minister O.Paneerselvam; the Urban Development Minister, Anitha R.Radhakrishnan, and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority officials. The cleaning contract is for a year and the exercise costs Rs.32 lakhs. The machine, costing Rs. 36 lakhs, can clean about 20,000 sqm an hour at a speed of 12 km per hour. Attached to a tractor, the machine removes a layer of dry sand, sieves and cleans it of waste. The CMDA officials say the machine makes available a safe, clean and fluffy sand surface. The CMDA Vice Chairperson, Jayanthi, said the beach did not fall under the purview of the private multinational cleaning firm, Onyx. Earlier, 50 persons were being used to clean the beach. Now the machine will undertake the operation. The CMDA Member-Secretary, P.R.Shampath, said that the appliance would operate everyday from early morning to noon. It is expected to clean the 3.2-km expanse by then. The CMDA planned to extend the operations to the Elliots Beach and the Tiruvanmiyur beach, he added.
