CUDDALORE Sept. 22. In a special Lok Adalat held at Annamalai Nagar, Chidambaram near here recently, 574 cases pertaining to non-payment of advances amounting to Rs. 1.32 crores obtained from the Indian Bank were settled.

In all, 1,657 summonses had been sent to the loanees. A sum of Rs. 3.70 lakhs had been settled on the spot, and consent obtained from the loanees to settle another Rs. 69.50 lakhs. The loans were obtained from the bank for buying cattle, boats and desilting water sources.

Eleven groups, comprising judicial officers and bank officers, were constituted to deal with the cases. Inaugurating the session, Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, Executive Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority and Madras High Court judge, said the Lok Adalat concept was first started to deal with motor accident claims.

Now, this mechanism was extended to settle cases relating to bank loans, municipal taxes and bouncing cheques as per the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The Madras High Court judge, E. Padmanabhan, said the Lok Adalat helped in speedy disposal of cases, which benefited both the banks and the loanees. He said nowadays even family disputes were being settled by the Lok Adalat.

He appreciated the efforts of the Cuddalore judicial officers who visited all villages in the district to spread legal literacy among villagers. He praised the District Chairman of the Authority and District and Sessions judge, R. Munirathinam, for taking the initiative to resolve the cases through the Adalat.
