B.K. Nair dead

ALAPPUZHA Aug. 11. The founder president of the INTUC in Kerala and former MP, B.K. Nair, passed away at Ernakulam this morning.

Born in Alappuzha in 1917, Mr. Nair had his education at the SDV School, Alappuzha, and Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. After his studies he left for Wardha.

After working with Gandhiji at Wardha, Mr. Nair became the secretary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. In the late 1940s, he returned to Kochi at the behest of Sardar Patel and Gulzarilal Nanda to form a unit of the INTUC here.

He formed the first unit of the INTUC in the State in 1949 merging the Kochi, Malabar and Mahe units of the workers' unions of the Congress. He was its first president and the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, the first secretary.

Till 1963, Mr. Nair and Mr. Karunakaran remained the top leaders of the INTUC in the State. Mr. Nair later served as the national vice-president and the joint secretary of the union. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mavelikara in the 1997 general elections.

During the split in the Congress in 1978, he remained with Indira Gandhi. In the 1980 Parliament elections, Mr. Nair won from Kollam. After the term, Mr. Nair slowly retired from politics. He has written four books. He is survived by four daughters and a son.

The cremation would take place at the Alappuzha Valiya Chudukad at 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
