Charges framed against Nedumaran

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM AUG. 11. L. Rajendran, judge of the special court at Poonamallee, near Chennai, today framed charges against the Tamilar Desiya Iyakkam president, P. Nedumaran, and four others — the general secretary, Suba Veerapandian; Pudukottai Pavanan, A. Thayappan and Shahul Hameed, publisher of Tamizh Muzhakkam, arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

The judge then extended their remand till September 11 and posted the case for that day for witness examination.

The judge said that while charges were framed against all the accused under Sections 21 (2) (support to a terrorist organisation) and 21 (committing an offence by addressing meetings to encourage support to a terrorist organisation) of the POTA, Mr. Nedumaran faced an additional charge under Section 21 (1) (a) (inviting support from the public for a terrorist organisation).

The `Q' Branch CID police filed the 1,416-page charge sheet on January 20 and copies were given to the accused on February 14. The charge sheet included material objects and 100 witness statements.

While Mr. Nedumaran was brought to the court from the Cuddalore jail, Mr. Suba Veerapandian, Dr. Thayappan, Mr. Shahul Hameed and Mr. Pudukottai Pavanan were brought from Chennai and Tiruchi prisons amid tight security.
