15 students hurt as bus falls into tank

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE JULY 24. At least 15 students of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Okalipuram, were injured when a bus they were travelling by fell into the Jakkur Tank here on Thursday.

The injured were admitted to Northside Hospital in Sahakaranagar and Baptist Hospital on Bellary Road. Police said 46 students and two teachers were on their way back from training in parasailing at the tank when the incident happened.

Residents of the nearby Sampigehalli village claimed that the bus driver, Ramachandrappa, was drunk. He lost control over the vehicle, they said.

Onlookers and those who were grazing sheep on the tank-bed rescued the students.

One of the villagers, Ananda Murthy, who was among the first to reach the spot, told The Hindu that the students were sent to hospitals in two vehicles.

Mr. Murthy alleged the driver had been drinking since he arrived in the morning. Another resident, Basavaraju, claimed some students refused to board the bus saying that the driver was drunk.

The Yelahanka Traffic Inspector, B.A.Vishwanath Singh, said the driver had been sent for medical examination.

Some teachers of the school, who came to meet the injured students at the Northside Hospital, said the driver did not heed the school's physical education instructor, Sharma's advise to drive slowly on the tank bund. However, the driver told police that he lost control over the vehicle as Mr. Sharma tried to meddle with the gears. Yelahanka Police have taken up a case. Investigation is on.

Meanwhile, the names of the injured students were given as Soumya, Bharath, Ankith, Akhil, Deepu, Manasa, Harsha, Kumaraswamy, Poornima, Shivamalika and Shamshad Begum, all aged between 12 and 14.
