Saturation campaign for epidemic control

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM July 24. The district administration has drawn up a grassroots-level action plan to intensify epidemic control activities with people's participation. The saturation campaign, to be implemented by local bodies, would cover all households and private and public institutions in the district.

Revealing the details of the programme at a press conference, the District Collector, E. Ayyappan, the Mayor, J. Chandra, the district panchayat president, Sasikala Sivasankar, and heads of other local bodies said it was aimed at eradicating epidemics and converting the capital into a totally clean district in a period of three years.

Mr.yyappan said the recent outbreak of Dengue fever, which claimed 10 lives, had forced the administration to embark on the action plan.

The programme will take off on Friday with an intensified clean up drive to be followed up with an awareness campaign at various levels. Mr. Ayyappan said the coordinated plan would involve garbage removal, waste water management, cleaning houses and public places, school sanitation and providing safe drinking water.

A sanitation and health committee, headed by the district panchayat, will monitor the programme.

A district resource team comprising 30 to 40 voluntary workers will provide support. Block, village and ward-level sanitation committees have been set up to implement the action plan.

They would be aided by local-level resource teams and health promotion teams comprising trained workers.

Mr. Ayyappan said the local bodies would chalk out a long-term programme of action to ensure continuity. The intensive clean up drive will be repeated every week for a specific period and at regular intervals thereafter.

As many as 12 district officers and tahsildars have been entrusted with the responsibility of providing feedback on the progress of the campaign.
