Viral fever: CM to sack negligent staff

By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad July 24. The viral fever issue took a new turn on Thursday with the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, issuing instructions for immediate removal from service of personnel found guilty of negligence resulting in death.

He said no one, from the lowest rank to the supervisory level, would be spared. "Such irresponsible people have no place in the Government, especially when children are simply dying," he said.

He also proposed booking of cases against them for criminal negligence.

He pulled up the Principal Health Secretary, M. Chaya Ratan, for not acting on a proposal by the Collector of Mahabubnagar district, which accounted for four out of five fatalities in the State today, to suspend five health personnel who were said to be responsible for some of the deaths. He asked her to take immediate steps.

Mr. Naidu noted that 154 of the 279 patients suspected to be suffering from viral fever had died.

The Health Minister, K. Sivaprasada Rao, announced that the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi, following recent discussions with him, had agreed to establish a regional laboratory and research centre at Hyderabad.

He said antigens were being brought in from a firm in Bangalore to fight communicable diseases and experts brought in to train staff here to administer them.
