CM asks police to be IT-savvy

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD July 24. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has expressed disappointment over the Police Department's inability to make optimal use of Information Technology in its functioning and get closer to the people.

``I am not satisfied'', he said referring to the limited use of computers in the eCops project and filing cases online and issuance of FIRs.

He was speaking at the launch of Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) website here on Thursday.

Mr. Naidu, however felt that the police had done a commendable job in maintaining law and order and shedding the negative image to certain extent.

Stating that the crime rate has gone down this year, he attributed this to better policing and modern methods adopted by the police. Complimenting the CID, he said they had recovered Rs. 83 crores from the cooperative banks that closed down in the State and it reflected the firm approach taken by the Government and non- interference in police's day-to-day activities.

The Home Minister, T. Devender Goud, made a case for reorganising the police structure stating that 85 per cent of the personnel did not see any growth in the profession and this was reflecting in their work.

He said the department had worked out on a plan to involve lower-level staff in the work. Mr. Naidu said there were quite a few reservations to the changes being suggested, but he too shared the views of the Home Minister. Mr. Goud said the Government was making all efforts to provide the best of infrastructure to the CID and said 50 vehicles were given to them recently.

The Additional DG, CID, M.L. Kumawat, said the launching of the website - www.cidap.gov.in - would bring in radical changes in the functioning of the CID.
