Kalimuthu's wife dead

Chennai July 24. The Assembly Speaker, K. Kalimuthu's wife, Nirmala, died here early this morning, after a brief illness. She was 53. Nirmala, who had been suffering from a liver-related problem since this January, suddenly developed a bout of cough and vomited blood around 1.30 a.m. at the Speaker's official residence on Greenways road. She died on way to a private hospital at 2.30 a.m.

The Speaker, who was away at Courtallam, flew back to Chennai this morning. The burial took place at St.Mary's cemetery this evening. Nirmala leaves three sons and two daughters.

A singer, she used to give musical performances at DMK meetings in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A Tamil enthusiast, she was pursuing postgraduation in Tamil literature by correspondence and was set to appear for the final year examinations this year.

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa; the DMK deputy general secretary, M.K. Stalin; the Congress legislature party leader, S.R. Balasubramaniam; the BJP leader, L. Ganesan; the MDMK presidium chairman, L. Ganesan, and the Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary, K. Veeramani, are among those who visited the Speaker's residence and paid their last respects.
