No intention to hurt local bodies: Minister

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM July 24. The Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, today said the Government had no intention of hurting the local bodies while withdrawing last year's allocation of funds to them.

Replying to a discussion on the Finance Bill in the State Assembly, he said the Finance Department's decision to take back the unspent funds from the local bodies was intended only to enforce financial discipline.

Defending criticism from the Opposition members, he said it was against the treasury codes and financial codes to hold on to the allotted funds beyond the end of a financial year. This indiscipline had been continuing for the last six years and it had to be stopped at some point.
