Mr. Sait, an executive member of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, said in a statement here today that Muslims would never accept any interference in their personal law (Shariat) and that they would not agree to a uniform civil code. He said that the Muslim Personal Law, which governed marriage, succession etc., was a divine law and that adhering to it was an essential part of being a Muslim. Syro-Malabar Church Meanwhile, the Syro-Malabar Church said it was not against the idea of a uniform civil code per se. However, according to Paul Thelakat, spokesperson for the church, the church had apprehensions about the content of such a code. Fr.Thelakat said that India is a rich mosaic of plurality and diversity of religions, castes, ethnic groups and languages, and wondered if uniformity would destroy this. NCCI concern Our Staff Reporter writes from Pathanamthitta: The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) has expressed concern over the Supreme Court's suggestion for a common civil code. In a statement here today, the NCCI general secretary, Fr. Ipe Joseph, said that though the Supreme Court's suggestion was in the larger interests of national integration, there was every possibility of its "exploitation by Governments controlled by communal forces''.
