Raveendran is champion

KOCHI JULY 24. C.R. Raveendran, who polishes wood for a living, won the top prize at the 28th AVT Premium Trophy Ernakulam YMCA Open all-Kerala chess tournament which concluded here on Thursday.

The 36-year-old player from Ernakulam won the medallist's title after staving off a strong challenge from a few seasoned stars, including Thrissur's Joy Lazar and Kozhikode's Abdul Majeed who took the second and third positions at the five-day event.

K.G. Nirmal bagged the non-medallists title while Mohammed Faizal finished runner-up.

Mr. M.K. Koshy, Chief Executive, AVT Kochi, gave away the prizes.

The results (medallists, final round): Joy Lazar (Tsr, 6 pts), drew with Abdul Majeed (Koz, 6), C.R. Raveendran (Ekm, 6.5) bt P.V. Girish (Ekm, 5), K. Haridas (5.5) drew with G.S. Sreejith (Tvm, 5.5), P.S. Ameer (Ekm, 5) lost to U.C. Mohanan (Ekm, 5.5), M. Suba Chandran (TN, 5) drew with Ephraem (TN, 5), Rahul Dev (5) drew with Salil Kumar (Ekm, 5), E.P. Nirmal (Tsr, 5) bt M. Jiby (4), Augustine K. Thomas (Wyd, 5) bt Binju Oommen (Pta, 4), N. Ramesan (4) lost to Mohammed Ashraf (Ekm, 5), Mahesh Chandran (Ekm, 5) bt N. Santhosh Kumar (Koz, 3.5).
