Andhra Pradesh
By Our Special Correspondent
Mr. Naidu's visit assumes significance in the light of his instructions to the Government top brass at a video-conference today to initiate severe disciplinary action against officials in districts where there is outbreak of epidemics. Thousands of tribals in the agency areas of Vizag are affected by fever. Meanwhile, the toll in the suspected viral encephalitis continued to rise with five more children succumbing today in Mahabubnagar (3) and Nizamabad (2). In all, seven new cases were reported, including one in Warangal. So far, 154 children have died of viral encephalitis out of 279 admitted to hospitals. The Government is worried about the spread of the virus to Mahabubnagar even as the incidence of brain fever in Warangal (44 deaths so far) and Karimnagar (48 deaths) districts is coming down slightly. Mahabubnagar now ranks third in the mortality rate with 17 deaths out of 34 cases admitted. This phenomenon is attributed to unhygienic conditions in villages and towns and leakage of drinking water pipes in several areas.
