Tapping wave power is his aim

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD July 24. A civil engineer in the Panchayat Raj Department has devised a novel method for producing electricity from ocean waves. Showcasing his display model at his home at Habsiguda here, K. Nagarjuna Rao says that he needs the help of some venture capitalist with Rs. 5 or 6 crores and two years patience to turn this design into reality.

Mr. Rao's model consists of a floating cylinder coupled with two counter weights on either side. These counter weights are connected to hydraulic cylinders. When the floating cylinder moves with the waves, it leads to water being pushed out of pipes at high pressure due to the action of the counter weights on the hydraulic cylinders. The regular movement of waves would provide continuous water at high pressure to turn turbines for generating electricity, explained Mr. Rao.

He estimates that his design converts 60 to 70 per cent of ocean power into electrical energy and claims that it would only cost about Rs. 2 crores to install capacity of 1 MW. He further adds that such a contraption over 10 to 15 metres of coastline can produce 1 MW of power.

Mr. Rao said he had already applied for patent on his design in the U.S., Australia and in India and now was looking for someone to finance further development of the idea into a working prototype which could be commercialised.
