Cong. against common civil code: Poojary

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE JULY 24. The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janardhana Poojary, today opposed the suggestion made by the Chief Justice of India, V.N. Khare, that the Union Government should endeavour to bring about a common civil code for all citizens irrespective of sex or religion.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Poojary said that a uniform civil code was not acceptable to the Congress. If the Union Government made any attempt to implement a uniform civil code by introducing an amendment to the Constitution, the KPCC would oppose it, he added.

`Cong., pseudo secular'

The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy (BJP), and the Deputy Leader, `Mukyamantri' Chandru, have welcomed the suggestion of the Supreme Court that a common civil code should be framed by the Parliament.

They told presspersons today that all political parties should welcome the suggestion and help the Government formulate a common civil code.

They criticised the Congress for not welcoming the suggestion, and alleged it was "pseudo secular".

The BJP State unit President, Ananth Kumar, has welcomed the suggestion of the Supreme Court to evolve a common civil code to assist the cause of national integration.
