Industry captains gather at CII meet in Chennai

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI JULY 24. The state of the Indian economy and the challenges relating to education, training, technical education and human resource development will be on top of the agenda for about 70 top CEOs of India Inc., when the national council of the Confederation of Indian Industry meets here on Friday.

The Council, which provides a mix of every sector of the economy — from manufacturing to services — will undertake a brainstorming of some of these key issues, besides looking at the WTO issues prior to the Ministerial Round at Cancun.

To be chaired by the CII president, Anand G. Mahindra, the national council will discuss the status and future of Indian manufacturing, with the objective of developing a national agenda for excellence in the sector.

According to the CII, "The economy has begun to see an upswing, with the growth of industrial sector in GDP by 6 per cent, compared to 3.3 per cent in the previous year. Despite this improvement, the headline GDP numbers have been disappointing due to poor performance of the agricultural sector.''

As the CII believes that India, with its population and demographic profile, "is uniquely positioned to be the human resource capital, to provide a variety of services to the rest of the world,'' the council will debate on education and HRD aspects.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, will deliver a special address to the council, to focus on industrialisation and development of the State.

Many of the captains of industry, including Sunil Kant Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Corporate Services, R. J. Shahaney, Chairman, Ashok Leyland, Jamshyd N. Godrej, Managing Director, Godrej and Boyce, J. J. Irani, Director, Tata Sons, Suresh Krishna, CMD, Sundram Fasteners, K. M. Mammen, CMD, MRF, C. K. Birla, Chairman, Hindustan Motors, Jagdish Khattar, Managing Director, Maruti Udyog, B. Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tisco, M. V. Subbiah, Executive Chairman, EID Parry, and David Friedman, Managing Director and President, Ford India, are expected to participate in the deliberations.
